Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony in Germany located on the Elbe River with 2.4 million inhabitants. Dresden was the capital and royal residence of the Kings of Saxony, who furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city center.
The inner city of Dresden was largely destroyed during WWII. Dresden was a part of East Germany until German reunification in 1990.
The city has undergone significant reconstruction in recent decades.
Tourism is an important sector of the economy with high revenue and many employees.
