Meteora
The Meteora is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.
The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly in central Greece near the beautiful town Kalambaka.
The Meteora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is recommended to stay in the Kalambaka and from there to drive to the "hanging monasteries" of Meteora.
We recommend you stay in Kalambaka for at list 1 night. Main sights recommended are:
- Great Meteoron Monastery-the largest Monastery.
- Varlaam Monastery.
