Mexico

Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas and the 13th largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of over 113 million, it is the eleventh most populous and the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world and the second most populous country in Latin America.

Mexico is a federation comprising of thirty-one states and a Federal District. The capital and its largest city is Mexico City.

Mexico has one of the world's largest economies; it is the tenth largest oil producer in the world, the largest silver producer in the world and is considered both a regional power and middle power.

Mexico has been traditionally among the most visited countries in the world and it is the second most visited country in the Americas (after the United States) with 22.5 million international arrivals per year (2010). Mexico has the highest income from tourism in Latin America.

The nation's temperate climate and unique culture make Mexico an attractive destination. The most notable tourist attractions are the Meso-American ruins, cultural festivals, colonial cities, nature reserves and the beach resorts.

On the Yucatán peninsula (Gulf of Mexico), one of the most popular beach destinations is the resort town of Cancún. On the Pacific coast Acapulco is the notable tourist destination.

At the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula is the resort town of Cabo San Lucas, a town noted for its beaches and marlin fishing.

A major tourist attraction is the ancient Maya city of Chichen Itza and its famous step-pyramid temple El Castillo.
