South Africa

South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation.

About 80 percent of South Africans are of black African ancestry, the remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European, Asian, and multiracial ancestry.

From 11 spoken languages, two are of European origin: English and Afrikaans, the latter originating from Dutch and serving as the first language of most white and colored South Africans. Though English is commonly used in public and commercial life, it is only the fourth most-spoken first language in South Africa.

South Africa is considered to be a newly industrialized country. Its economy is the largest and most developed in Africa and the 28th-largest in the world.

South Africa has three capitals: Cape Town (legislative), Pretoria (administrative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city and the source of a large-scale gold and diamond trade.

South Africa is a popular tourist destination, and a substantial amount of revenue comes from tourism.

Durban is famous for being the busiest port in South Africa and is one of the major centers of tourism because of the city's warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches.

We recommend you take a 750 km drive of the picturesque Garden Route between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, and enjoy the natural beauty and sights (including whales and dolphins) along the way. About halfway, at George city, take the road to Oudtshoorn, (about 60 km drive) and visit the town with the world's largest ostrich population. Take a tour in Cango Caves, one of the country's finest, best known and most popular tourist caves.

Take a safari in Kruger National Park, one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It is renowned for its diversity of wildlife and is a famous tourist attraction with over 1.4 million visitors a year.

If you like to relax in a beautiful resort area, go to Sun City, about two hours' drive north from Johannesburg. It is Africa’s most famous conference, casino and entertainment complex.
