Spain is located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe and its capital and largest city is Madrid.

It is one of three countries (Morocco, France) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines.

Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the fifth largest country in Europe.

The Spanish tourism industry has grown to become the second biggest in the world contributing 6.4% of Spain's GDP. The Spain's climate, historical and cultural monuments and its geographic position together with its facilities make tourism one of Spain's main national industries and a large source of stable employment and development.

In 2010, Spain is the fourth most visited country in the world (after France, USA and China) with 53 million visitors.

Among the most popular tourist cities in Spain are: Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Malaga, Marbella, Seville, Cordoba.

Other popular sites are: El Escorial in San Lorenzo, Aqueduct of Segovia, Walls of Avila, La Concha in San Sebastian (Basque Country).

The islands which attract very large numbers of tourists are: Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic.

It is recommended to visit Gibraltar at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula.
